# How the process works

You prepare your file, your lawyer files the petition, Immigration reviews it and interviews you, you take the knowledge exam, and the naturalization certificate (carta de naturaleza) is granted.

Your application moves through several institutions before a naturalization certificate is issued. Immigration reviews it and interviews you, you take the knowledge exam with the Electoral Tribunal, and the certificate is issued by the President. Since September 2026 the file can be handled electronically, but the oath and the Civil Registry entry remain in person.
